Sterols from the Green Alga Ulva australis
Three new sterols, (24R)-5,28-stigmastadiene-3β,24-diol-7-one (1), (24S)-5,28-stigmastadiene-3β,24-diol-7-one (2), and 24R and 24S-vinylcholesta-3β,5α,6β,24-tetraol (3), together with three known sterols (4-6) were isolated from the green alga Ulva australis. The structures of the new compounds (1-3) were elucidated through 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy as well as mass spect...
متن کاملPhosphorus-limited growth of a green alga and a blue-green alga.
The phosphorus-limited growth kinetics of the chlorophyte Scenedesmus quadricauda and the cyanophyte Synechococcus Nägeli were studied by using batch and continuous culturing techniques. The steady-state phosphate transport capability and the phosphorus storage capacity is higher in S. Nägeli than in S. quadricauda. Synechococcus Nägeli can also deplete phosphate to much lower levels than can S...
متن کاملDefined Media for Growth and Gamete Production by the Green Alga, Oedogonium cardiacum.
Defined media consisting of inorganic salts and vitamin B(12) are described for the male and female filaments of the green alga, Oedogonium cardiacum. These media provide for a maximal growth rate and for the induction of oogonia and antheridia under the prescribed conditions. The maximal amounts of growth, based on dry weight measurements, compare favorably with other green algae.
متن کاملIsolation and structure elucidation of a new alkaloid from the Indonesian Blue-Green Alga Arthrospira platensis
A new alkaloid (1) and two known compounds (2 and 3) were isolated from the blue-greenalga Arthrospira platensis. Their structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data.According to the obtained data and values in the literature, the compounds were concluded to beeckol.
متن کاملThe apicoplast: a red alga in human parasites.
Surprisingly, some of the world's most dangerous parasites appear to have had a benign photosynthetic past in the ocean. The phylum Apicomplexa includes the causative agents of malaria and a number of additional human and animal diseases. These diseases threaten the life and health of hundreds of millions each year and pose a tremendous challenge to public health. Recent findings suggest that A...
